The TÜV SÜD Safety Gauge is a market research study investigating the awareness, understanding and importance offood safety issues among consumers and businesses.

The research highlights that 7 of 10consumers believe product safety is very important when purchasing foodproducts. Moreover, this proportion is set to rise in the next 5 years.

Further investigation reveals thatfood businesses report undertaking more safety practices than businesses inother segments. In addition, food businesses are more likely to use third partytesting services. Despite these efforts, almost 1 in every 3 food businessesbelieves that product safety remains a significant issue in the food segment ingeneral.

Based on this findings, there is anopportunity for businesses to increase food safety by shifting safety effortsfrom the export destination country to the country of origin. This „safety ofsource“ approach will provide significant cost savings and improve supply chaintransparency while helping to educate local suppliers to meet global foodsafety standards. In turn, consumers will benefit from the improved food safetystandards they expect.
